FUNDING: For Youth Initiated Activities

Do Something funding is available to U.S. or Canadian citizens, 25 or under, who want to further the growth and success of their existing community action project. The $500 grant money needs to be used to fund a community action project initiated by young people. Applications accepted year-round and grants are awarded weekly.

FUNDING: PreK-12 Educational Programs

Qwest Foundation supports nonprofit organizations and focuses on enriching the lives of children by supporting solid preK-12 educational programs. Grants are provided for programs that promote innovative models to strengthen K-12 public school education, effectively use technology, improve skills and leadership of educators and parents, and promote innovative early childhood education programs. Requests may be submitted at any time.

FUNDING: Support for Green Building Projects

The Kresge Foundation is interested in sustainable building practices, environmental stewardship and sound land-use planning. The Green Building Initiative advances environmental conservation by awarding planning grants for sustainable design. The Foundation accepts online letters of intent throughout the year.

RESOURCE: Nonprofits in Washington:  Update 2009 Now Available

What do the numbers say about nonprofit organizations in San Juan County?  The latest annual update to Nonprofits in Washington (December, 2009), a report on the scope and character of nonprofit organizations in Washington state co-authored by Center Senior Advisor Putnam Barber and Research Assistant Nina Tantraphol, is now available on the Nancy Bell Evans Center website.  Nonprofits in Washington draws on data from public records, both published and unpublished, to sketch in general terms the numbers of recorded nonprofit organizations in the state, their size and financial characteristics, where they are located, and the services they provide.

RESOURCE: San Juan County Sustainable Connections Catalog

The Whole Islands Catalog is an online resource for people to share skills, knowledge and connect with one another. Based on community ethics regarding social and environmental responsibility organizations can use the directory to post a free listing describing what you offer to the San Juan Islands community.  The project, sponsored by the San Juan County Economic Development Council and hosted by Orcas Public Library, is intended to serve all Islands of San Juan County.

RESOURCE: Final IRS Forms 990 and Training Now Available

The 2008 Forms 990 and 990-EZ information returns for tax-exempt organizations are now finalized, along with schedules and instructions, for filing in 2009. If you plan on filling out the Form 990 yourself visit StayExempt.org. The site now has the original five virtual workshop sessions, five mini-courses that cover topics important to tax-exempt organizations, and five mini-courses discussing aspects of the redesigned annual return (Form 990) for exempt organizations.

RESOURCE: Assistance to Bring Conferences to the San Juan Islands

Those of us in the non-profit arena attend one or two conferences each year around the state or region, in addition to board retreats. Why not save on travel funds and invite the group here? The San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau would be happy to help your group hold a productive and rejuvenating meeting or retreat in the islands. Contact Deborah Hopkins for more information or call 378-3277 x5.  They can assist you in choosing facilities, caterers, spouse activities, team building activities, and more.  Bring your next meeting home to the islands!
